Waltz with Bashir

Posted by LazyMuffin - October 20th, 2008

HEY!

First off, working on Nameless, will hopefully finish a Halloween 3 minute thing on time.
That is all the flash news I have.

NOW, I would like to discuss an animated, Israel-based movie called Waltz with Bashir.
It's about the director of the movie (Ari Folman) who was a part of the first Lebanon war, but blocked out most of his memories from that time. He goes to friends he remembers from the war and tries to piece everything together. It's an animated documentary with mostly flashbacks.

I'm not telling you about this movie for it's story though, I'm telling you about this just so you can see the animation. The animation was made in Flash and some other 3D program.
As someone who works with flash almost daily this boggles my mind. Just watch the trailer.

I have no idea how they did it. I just can't think of it as a .FLA.
I think it's worth a watch just for the animation. So watch it.

Cool?
Cool.

GRR, the video won't load for me >:(

Can I have the URL, please?

Just youtube Waltz with Bashir

Nice vid, its LOLTASTIC, just kidding. It was really serious.

pretty neat. The shot with the flies around that eyeball was cool.
Seemed like there was some rotoscoping used no?

Yeah, all of the interviews were actually filmed.
However, the flashbacks, which are about 85% of the movie are not.

Cock in muffin joke.

Wow...
That's amazing...
I knew flash was powerful...
but that blew me away...

I've seen animation of near this quality from the Asian flash studios that sometimes post previews here but it is only remotely close

outside of the 3D and rotoscoping, the animation was kinda limited, but detailwise its awesome and I want to see it when its completed

The trailer really doesn't show the best the movie has.
It's completed. Currently it's only showing at artsy film festivals but I think it should come out for everyone eventually.

The scene where he span around shooting in the air was marvelous. So is this film in the cinema's now? Man, I'd hate do have to see the loading screen at the from of that .swf...

Anyway, thanks for this, very nice to seeeeeeee.

It is here in Israel, I don't know when you guys will get it.

Looks like an animated comic book. Awesome.

Dude that's like nothing I make Flashes like that all the time in fact I... I just made one while I was typing this. DONE. See it's easy.

Well you're Tom Fulp, that's not fair.

Muffin in cock joke.

and yeah
that is quite an amazing flash-ery there.
It looks like cell shading,
which is some hightech fancy pants Pixar level shit.
I cant imagine him actually drawing that shit out fbf.
He'd be a god if he did.

Don't get me wrong, it wasn't made by one guy.
It took like 4 years to make, I think at least some parts are FBF.

Please let me know when I can buy the film! I'm wowed.

I have no idea, sorry

omigod it's Tom. Hi! Anyway, I can see how blown away you are by this. It's purty crazeh.

Those Lebanese and Israelites, when will they ever get along, and that guy kinda looks like Edward Norton, besides that this movie looks mighty crazy!!!

What can we say? Were violent!
Ha ha ha

Is there anyway you could find out how he did that? I think it looks very cool.

It was a team of animators.
They did only like 2.4 seconds of animation a day or something ridiculous like that.
They know things.

you are the greatest man ever, i love you
nameless is so funny
check me out and comment^^
because i want you to join a collab

in flash.....

o_o

It looks pretty epic D:

I won't deny it looks really cool and pretty unique, but I think there was little to no traditional animation in there. The parts that weren't rotoscoped looked like they were done in 3D and then cel shaded. Not that I'm trying to diminish the accomplishment, but I feel like the use of flash largely involved plugins with which many of us are not familiar, hence that whole "I have no idea how they did it. I just can't think of it as a .FLA." Hey, but wtf do I know, I'm just a dude.

I don't think so. When you see it, you can tell some of it is flash due to the brushy-ness of everything.
I GUESS YOU'LL HAVE TO SEE IT.

Looks like the bone tool in CS4

no way, it's in the making for 4 years now
